History & Culture
Black History is about far more than slavery. BHC explores thousands of years of African and diasporic history alongside the extraordinary cultural creativity that has emerged from Black communities around the world.
Here we will explore:
- African civilisations and histories
- Resistance to slavery and colonialism
- Emancipation, migration, and Windrush
- Community histories
- The lives of people whose stories have often remained outside traditional accounts of history
Culture is equally important. Music, language, literature, food, faith, art, poetry, storytelling, and celebration all carry histories across generations and continents.
From African heritage to Caribbean culture, from reggae and dub poetry to contemporary Black British experience, these stories help us understand how identities are created and shared.
This section will bring together BHC recordings, articles, cultural contributions, and recommended resources — and invite participants to contribute stories from their own communities.
