Season 13

(Sept 2024 - Dec 2024)

Session 147

This week, We're delighted to have Jackie Pennant, one of our NWJS members from Florida who is with us this week in Bangor.

Also contributing will be June Elizabeth White Smith Gully, Gilbert Watkins, and Carl Green, as well as other UK-based members.

Here's a recap of what we discussed.

Session 148

Family researcher, Lesley Evans, shares some fascinating findings from her research into Bangor University's Penrhyn Papers. She has been working to identify the names and discover the lives of enslaved people on the Pennant Family Plantations in Jamaica.

Here's a recap of what we discussed.

Session 149

We were joined by PhD Researcher Tre Ventour - Griffiths from Northampton. His work is exceptional - with such an interesting perspective of a younger person looking back to the days of their parents and grandparents.

His PhD research is about UK Windrush and post-Windrush communities in Northamptonshire, 1948-1985. It aims to show Caribbean experiences of postwar Britain extended beyond London and other major cities, including representations of Blackness in the rural and small towns.

Here's a recap of what we discussed.

Session 150

BHC150! Thanks to you all for keeping track of our Black History Conversations - now into our 13th season, we are so grateful to all the researchers, authors, activists, creative artists and others who have given a little of their time to join us over the past 12 BHC Seasons.

This session will be no exception, but exceptional! Many thanks to Prof Catherine Hall for agreeing to join us. This was indeed a very special session of Black History Conversations!

Here's a recap of what we discussed.

Session 151

This week we welcomed Dr Beverly Prevatt Goldstein, to share her passion as a community historian in African studies, championing equalities and anti-racism initiatives.

Here's a recap of what we discussed.

Session 152

Black History Conversations this Friday 18th October featured our special Jamaican guest, Clarendon’s Director of Education - Barrington Richardson who is currently over in North Wales courtesy of the Welsh Government supported Taith initiative.

Barrington reflected on his journey here to Wales and around Wales visiting schools and engaging in community events and his efforts to support the Building Bridges of Friendship programme and the forthcoming visit to Jamaica by members of the North Wales Jamaica Society.

Here's a recap of what we discussed.

Session 153

The last couple of weeks have been a bit different as some of us journeyed to Jamaica from Wales to 'Build Bridges of Friendship’

Here's a recap of what we discussed.

Session 154

Today, Black History Conversations shares more about Learning Links International’s 'Building Bridges of Friendship' project - with links between Wales and Jamaica.

We recognise that Season 13 has been focussed very much on the 'Building Bridges of Friendship’ project - exploring the shared history of Wales and Jamaica. This was not planned or intentional, but this just happened when the LLI Team recognised just what potential could come from our success in gaining funds from the Welsh Government funded Taith international exchange scheme could look like, and what hard work this would be!

Your patience and interest has been a real support.

However we made it to the 150 BHC Anniversary session when we welcomed Prof Catherine Hall to join us and explain why it is that the Pennant families story is so important. The link to: BHC 150 is here.

This week Fri 12th December 2024 we will be hearing from Dr Kirt Henry, Director of the Institute of Jamaica and hear more about slate links with Jamaica

Here's a recap of what we discussed.
